The hunt for a Manhattan couple who abducted their eight kids from foster care ended with a dragnet around a van, the wails of frightened children and a shocking allegation.
Tracking cell phone calls and food purchases, cops and marshals followed Shanel Nadal and Nephra Payne to South Carolina and Pennsylvania.
Hours after they were taken into custody, their lawyer dropped a bombshell, claiming Nadal, 28, and Payne, 34, took the youngsters from a Queens foster care facility because some of them were being abused.
"The children were sexually molested while in the care of the city," said the lawyer, Norman Steiner.
"You can't blame the parents for acting in the children's best interest. It's a shame the city failed them."
He refused to give specifics or say if the couple reported the alleged abuse before swiping the kids from a supervised visit on Sept. 19. An Administration for Children's Services spokesman said the agency is aware of the claim but had no comments.
The children were found a week after they vanished from the Forestdale Agency in Queens in what appears to be a well-planned escape.
